V6

[Verse 1] I know your face, I know your smile, Haven't seen you in a little while. I know where we met, I know your story, But your name... it's gone. I'm sorry. You told me once, I thought I'd remember, Then somehow it vanished by the end of December. Your face stuck around, that's not the problem, It's that one little name my brain decided to drop. [Chorus] I know your face, but your name has left the building, I know exactly who you are. I'll recognize you anywhere, But your name? I haven't got a clue. So I'll smile and say, “Hey! How've you been?” And hope somebody else walks in. I know your face, but your name has left the building, Please don't make me say it. [Verse 2] I'll say, “Hey, girl!” I'll say, “Hey, man!” “Hey, buddy!”—whatever I can. “How've you been?” “It's good to see you!” Anything except the name I should be using. I'll introduce you as “my friend,” And hope somebody says your name in the end. I'll keep the conversation moving along, Just praying I don't get asked what's wrong. [Chorus] I know your face, but your name has left the building, So I'm getting creative with what I call you. “Hey, buddy.” “Hey, friend.” “How've you been?” I'll keep this conversation going until your name comes back in. I'll talk about anything, I'll change the subject twice, Anything is better than asking you outright. I know your face, but your name has left the building, And I'm hoping you don't notice. [Verse 3] Then somebody asks, “What's their name?” And suddenly my brain forgets the game. I know it starts with... maybe a J? But which J? My brain won't say. Jason? Justin? Jenny? Jane? Now I'm just standing there guessing names. I know I know it. It's right in my head. Why does it always disappear when it matters? [Bridge] Then someone says it—there it is! “Oh! Right! Of course I knew that!” It was sitting there the whole time, Apparently just waiting for somebody else to say it. I'll nod like I've known it all along, Like my memory hasn't done me wrong. But deep down, I have to admit... I needed a little help with it. [Verse 4] Sometimes I meet you and learn your name, And five minutes later, it's gone again. I know your face, I know you're you, But that little name? Nowhere in view. So I'll smile and say, “Hey!” And somehow get through the day. If I call you “friend,” just go with it. I'm sure your name will come back eventually. [Final Chorus] I know your face, but your name has left the building, I know exactly who you are. I'll recognize you anywhere, But your name is somewhere very far. So I'll smile and say, “Hey, you!” And hope that's good enough to get me through. I know your face, but your name has left the building, And if you ask me... give me a minute. [Outro] “Hey! Great seeing you!” “Do you remember my name?” ... “Absolutely.” I just wish my brain did.
