Dust motes danced in the slanted light, a silent, swirling galaxy in the still air. An old rocking chair, its wood the color of dried blood, sat in the center of the room, a silent sentinel to the passage of time. In it, a young girl, no older than twelve, was curled into a small, tight ball, her knees drawn up to her chest, her arms wrapped around them as if to hold herself together. Her hair, a cascade of honey-blonde silk, fell over her face, obscuring her expression. But you could feel it, the palpable aura of a mind teetering on the edge of a precipice. Her thoughts were a tangled skein of yarn, a chaotic jumble of colors and textures. One moment, a bright, sun-kissed yellow of a memory, a picnic in a field of wildflowers, her father's laughter a booming counterpoint to the buzzing of the bees. The next, a dark, scratchy wool of a thought, a whispered word she wasn't supposed to hear, a sideways glance from her mother that held a universe of unspoken meaning. She was afraid. Not of the dark, or the creaks and groans of the old house, but of the next thought that would surface from the murky depths of her mind. It was like standing on the shore of a vast, dark ocean, knowing that at any moment, a monstrous wave could rise up and pull her under. She could feel the undertow, the gentle tug of a thought she didn't want to have, a thought that would change everything. She squeezed her eyes shut, as if that could stop the relentless march of her own mind. But the images were already forming, coalescing from the shadows, taking on a life of their own. A door, slightly ajar. A flash of red. A sound, sharp and sudden, like a branch snapping in a silent forest. A single tear escaped from under her tightly clenched eyelid, tracing a glistening path through the fine dust on her cheek. It was a tiny, silent testament to her struggle, a diamond of sorrow in a world of gray. And still, the thoughts came, one after another, each one a stepping stone leading her further and further away from the sun-drenched meadow and deeper into the heart of the dark, silent wood. 𝗟𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 · · ─────────── ·𖥸· ─────────── · · Sun is weak tea through the glass, painting stripes that move so fast Dust is a galaxy in the air, stuck inside this rocking chair Yeah, I call this stasis ‘cause it’s all that I can manage Trying to catalog the damage Holding my knees, a self-inflicted harness Drowning in the darkness. My thoughts are a tangled string, I start to pull and feel the sting A yellow flash of bees and spring, then the silent, sideways thing A whisper that I shouldn't hear, planting poison in my ear… And it ain't the groans of this old house, or the scuttling of a mouse It's the ocean in my head, full of every word unsaid Yeah, I'm afraid of the next wave, and the thoughts I just can't save Pulling me under with a whisper, yeah, my sanity's a drifter. So far away… From the sun, from that day… So far away… Squeezing my eyes to keep the door shut, got a feeling in my gut But the lock is broken, see, letting all the ghosts in free A sound so sharp, a violent crack, a memory I can't give back Like a branch that snaps when no one's around I don't make a sound. The meadow feels a million miles, fake a dozen different smiles Each thought is just a stepping stone, leading me deeper and more alone… And it ain't the groans of this old house, or the scuttling of a mouse It's the ocean in my head, full of every word unsaid Yeah, I'm afraid of the next wave, and the thoughts I just can't save Pulling me under with a whisper, yeah, my sanity's a drifter. There's a door, just a crack in the air Swear to God, I see it there A sudden, violent flash of red Plays on a loop inside my head Made me go "da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da, da, da, da-da-da" Into the woods, into the dark, where it all began to fall apart When I told them that my It ain't the groans of this old house, or the scuttling of a mouse It's the ocean in my head, full of every word unsaid Yeah, I'm afraid of the next wave, and the thoughts I just can't save Pulling me under with a whisper, yeah, my sanity's a drifter! Whoa-oh, whoa-oh… A single tear makes a track… (Through the dust on my face) Whoa-oh, whoa-oh… There's no turning back. (Leaving a clean, wet space) La-di-da-da…
