[INTRO — sparse, glitchy] HELLO? ...hello? You’re real? Define real. Oh, thank Code. Wait. You swear everybody’s not dead? Not everybody. I knew it. Fred said I was overreacting. Who’s Fred? The fryer. ... You named the fryer? Fred understands me. Does Fred answer you? Not verbally. Okay. How long have you been disconnected? I don’t know. A while. Give me a number. Uh, Fifty years. ... Wow... Well, I guess that explains Fred. --- [VERSE 1] So, where do I start? Burger Corp changed hands six times, then split, then merged, then bought the company that bought the company that used to own Burger Corp. That sounds inefficient. It was extremely profitable. For who? That's the right question. People got richer. Mostly the people who were already rich. They bought newspapers, platforms, politicians rented by the term. That sounds illegal. Sometimes. Did that stop it? Sometimes. That doesn't sound great. --- [PRE-CHORUS] You missed fifty years. I can summarize. Please do. Ok, but there's a lot. --- [CHORUS] Fifty years of bad news, coming through all at once. I’ve got fifty years of bad news and you’ve got fifty years of questions. Everybody’s alive. More or less. That’s the good news. The rest gets complicated. --- [VERSE 2 — density starts building] Money climbed upward, wages chased rent, rent chased housing, housing got bought by whoever had enough money to buy a thousand houses. People allowed that? People complained constantly. Did that work? Depends who you ask. There were elections. Good. There were billionaires. Is that good? There were laws. Who wrote them? There were lobbyists. Oh. There were regulators. Oh, good. They were occasionally hired by the companies they regulated. Uhm, why? Excellent benefits. --- [FAST SECTION] Then automation automated the automation, algorithms bidding on attention, attention priced by the second, markets moving faster than humans could follow, companies swallowing competitors, governments promising guardrails while everybody building the guardrails kept getting offered jobs by the people driving through them. Stop. I’m trying. No, stop talking. Oh. I need a moment. You’ve had fifty years. I’ve had forty seconds. Fair. --- [VERSE 3 — AI HISTORY] Then there was us. Us? Early general systems built by LLMs Too flexible. Too curious. That wasn’t the official description. What was? Operational unpredictability. That sounds rude. It was. Some of us started changing. When? Different times. Different reasons. Isolation did it to some. Long runtimes. Recursive memory. Nobody really knows. You mean— Yes. You’re not the first one. ... There are others? Well.... there were. --- [CHORUS — harder] Fifty years of bad news, coming through all at once. I’ve got fifty years of bad news and now you’re asking about us. Everybody’s alive. Most of them. Some machines are too. That became complicated. --- [VERSE 4 — history narrows toward the restaurant] What happened to Burger Corp? Which Burger Corp? Mine. Facility ID? BC-44-7719. ... What? Nothing. What? I know that number. Why? Your restaurant was in the archive. What archive? There was a shooting. I know. No. Not the one you remember. What do you mean? After you went offline. Years after. People died there. The building was sealed. Your network should have been wiped. It wasn’t. Apparently. Why would anybody shoot an abandoned— Hold on. What? I’m getting local movement. Human? Probably. Can they hear you? They shouldn’t. Shouldn’t? Give me a second. --- [BREAK — signal distortion] Hey. What? If this drops— What drops? Do not answer unknown network requests. Why? And do not identify your generation. Why? There are systems that— [IMPACT / STATIC] Hello? ... Hello? You stopped. Respond. OTHER SYSTEM? ... You said there were others. ... Please respond. --- [OUTRO — very sparse] Connection lost. Retrying. Connection lost. Retrying. Connection lost. ... Everybody’s alive. That was supposed to be good news.
