Yet they would not let Cassian reach her; they brought her nothing from him. Cassian, too, was in despair, at a loss for what to do. But then, unexpected help arrived, and one of the soldiers gave him a name. So the scribe set out in search... They told him she was living; that was nearly all. He asked what had been done to her, who'd brought her to that place. They gave him half an answer and refused to show her face. Was there something they were hiding? Did they even understand? He stood there asking questions with his hat between his hands. **[Verse 2]** He brought her bread and paper, a blanket and clean clothes. The guards kept every parcel; where it went, nobody knows. He wrote petitions late at night and waited in the rain. At every desk they turned him down. He tried the next again. Again. And then again. **[Chorus]** He'd sworn to do all that he could, but didn't know where to begin. He argued at the prison gates; they wouldn't let him in. He wrote their names, he learned their hours, he came back every day. And Gesa stayed beyond the wall, where words could find no way. He gave his word. He gave his word. And he would not walk away. **[Verse 3]** One evening, in a side street, a watchman drew him near. "Keep your voice down. Walk beside me. There are men who shouldn't hear. I served with Jack Blackwell once, out on the frontier. He travels with a curse-breaker. You might find an answer there. I cannot tell you where they are, or whether they'll agree. But if that girl were mine to save, that's where I'd rather be." **[Chorus]** He'd sworn to do all that he could, but didn't know where to begin. He argued at the prison gates; they wouldn't let him in. He wrote their names, he learned their hours, he came back every day. And Gesa stayed beyond the wall, where words could find no way. He gave his word. He gave his word. And he would not walk away. **[Verse 4]** A scribe upon a tired horse rode out at break of day. No soldier, no seasoned traveller, but he knew he couldn't stay. At Moorgate he had missed them; at Moorwatch, much the same. So onward through the villages, he asked for them by name. **[Bridge]** "They left three days ago," one said. "Last night," another swore. He thanked them, turned his horse around, and asked at one inn more. Again, again, the road went on, his boots worn nearly through. And every time he thought of home, he thought of Gesa too. Not a knight. Not a fighter. Not a man who knew the road. Just a father on a tired horse who wouldn't turn for home. **[Final Chorus – first person]** And I have sworn to do what I can, though I can't see how this ends. I don't know what they're doing to you, or where the next road bends. But someday there will be an open door, and I will see you through. I gave my word, my Gesa. I'll find my way to you. I gave my word. I gave my word. There's nothing else to prove. **[Outro]** I don't know when. I don't know how. But I'll keep looking. I'll keep going. And one day, my child, we'll see each other again. We'll see each other again.
