The Moments in Between

Why do we always have to chase things? Have the best of the best Prove to the world that we’re worth it Till there’s nothing of us left Getting lost inside the crowd Trying hard to make them see Like somehow having everything Could tell me who I’m supposed to be But everything we fight to hold Gets left behind someday And all the things we thought we needed Don’t mean much anyway The world eats you up and spits you out When it’s taken what it needs It was never yours or mine to keep One day it passes on from me You can spend your whole life chasing Something you can’t take when you leave Maybe all we ever really own Are the moments in between All the expensive things Collecting everything in the set Doesn’t even come close To a minute that you’ll never forget A laugh inside a quiet room Someone sitting next to you A memory you didn’t know Would mean everything when it was through You can’t buy another yesterday Or make somebody stay There isn’t enough money in the world To bring one second back again The world eats you up and spits you out When it’s taken what it needs It was never yours or mine to keep One day it passes on from me You can spend your whole life chasing Something you can’t take when you leave Maybe all we ever really own Are the moments in between So look for what means the most to you Before the years disappear Call the ones you keep putting off While they’re still here Let the world keep all its trophies Let somebody else compete I’d trade every single one of them For one more memory The world eats you up and spits you out Then forgets that you were here So hold the people that you love A little closer while they’re near Nothing that we build can follow us Nothing stays the way it seems The world was never ours to keep But these moments... They belong to you and me.
