Chasing Purpose

V5.5

[Verse 1] Southern California, OC to be exact That’s where my story started. Growing up, my favorite basketball team was the Bulls. To me they looked like a dream team. Every superstar wanted to wear that jersey. Michael Jordan, number twenty-three, was the greatest in my eyes. That’s why to this day I still throw on a red shirt. Walk up and down the street, I never cared what anybody thought. Southsiders, Northsiders… I never picked sides. To me it was always basketball. Back then all I wanted was a fresh pair of Jordans. Soon as a new color dropped, we had to hit the mall. Spend a hundred… two hundred… whatever it took. Before buying fancy clothes or trying to impress anybody. Those shoes weren’t just sneakers. They were part of my childhood. [Chorus] Everybody sees what you wear. Very few people know where you came from. Everybody talks about success. Very few understand the sacrifices behind it. [Verse 2] In every song I write, I always end up talking about my dad. Some people probably wonder why. Because he was the first example I ever had. My grandpa too. They taught me that family comes first. That your word matters. That when life gets heavy, you don’t quit. You stand up and keep moving. One of my favorite songs growing up was Livin’ Large, I Wanna Be a Baller. My neighbor used to play it every day in his Impala. I was just a kid listening from down the street. But somehow it made me believe that dreams could be bigger than the neighborhood. [Verse 3] People think money gives you unlimited choices. The more money… The more power… The more options. That’s what everybody says. But life doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes success brings responsibility. Sometimes people expect you to carry what came before you. Sometimes they hand you a seat at the table… and expect you to protect everything your family built. [Bridge] I remember chasing Jordans. Now I’m chasing purpose. I remember dreaming about Michael Jordan. Now I’m trying to leave behind something my own family can be proud of. That’s a different kind of legacy. [Outro] People see the shoes. They see the clothes. They see the money. But they don’t see the journey. They don’t see the long nights. They don’t see the lessons my dad and my grandpa left behind. Those are the things that made me who I am. And every time I tell my story… I’m telling theirs too.
