There Is No Judge In This

V6

THERE IS NO JUDGE IN THIS ROOM [Verse 1] There she is again, Sitting high above me. I know this courtroom well. I’m standing there explaining, Trying desperately to tell A story that keeps changing Every time somebody speaks. And I’m screaming, Please just hear me. But no sound comes out of me. Then I look around the room— There is no courtroom. There is no witness stand. There is only me, lying here, with trembling hands. [Chorus] There is no judge in this room. There is no trial tonight. I don’t have to make my case. I don’t have to prove I’m right. My children aren’t on the witness stand. Nobody’s taking them from my arms. This is my frightened mind trying to protect me by rehearsing every harm. But I am here. Right here. And there is no judge in this room. [Verse 2] I have tried so hard to be flawless that I forgot I’m allowed to be real. I’m allowed to get tired. I’m allowed to get frustrated. I’m allowed to feel what I feel. I can apologize when I’m wrong without deciding I am bad. I can have one terrible moment and still be everything I’ve been. A mother isn’t measured by the worst five minutes of her life. Love is built in ordinary mornings, rides and lunches, laundry, bedtimes, showing up, and showing up, and showing up again. Some of that may never be witnessed. But invisible love is still love. [Chorus] There is no judge in this room. There is no trial tonight. Nobody needs my testimony. Nobody needs my evidence tonight. I will write down what matters tomorrow. But right now I am coming home. Back into my body. Back into this moment. Back into the life that is actually happening. [Bridge] And my children— Oh God, my children— I don’t need them to testify for me. I don’t need them to choose me. I don’t need them to prove that I was the good one. They are children. Let them be children. They can love their dad. They can be angry with me. They can misunderstand me. They can tell somebody I screwed up. And I will still be here tomorrow. I will not ask my children to carry the burden of proving who I am. [Build] I am not a robot. I am not a case file. I am not an allegation. I am not somebody’s description of me. I am a human being. I get tired. I make mistakes. I repair. I learn. I love. I keep going. And I refuse to spend the rest of my life testifying in a courtroom that does not exist. [Quiet] Look at the ceiling. Feel the blanket. Feel the pillow. Listen to the room. There are no lawyers here. There is no judge here. There is no testimony happening. My children are not being questioned. Nobody is asking me to prove anything. Not now. Not here. [Final Chorus] There is no judge in this room. There is only this breath. And then another. And another. Whatever tomorrow requires of me, tomorrow can have it. But tonight belongs to me. I don’t have to earn my rest. I don’t have to prove my love. I don’t have to become perfect to deserve to be heard. And even when someone doesn’t understand me, I will not disappear from myself. Even when I feel invisible, I will see myself. Even when I feel unheard, I will hear myself. Even when I’m frightened, I will stay with myself. There is no judge in this room. The hearing is over. Come home. Come home. Come home. [Whisper] You don’t have to testify tonight. Sleep.
