Why Wasn't Being Free Enough?

I think I finally understand What I couldn't see before— How our help could start to feel like pressure, How our involvement could feel like more. If what we saw as love and helping Felt like something binding you, Then walking from the shop may have been What you believed you had to do. And maybe we all had reached the end, Though neither side could see— You walked away from what we'd built, We closed the line of credit quietly. Two boundaries drawn at basically the same time, Two sides that said, “This isn't working any more.” You wanted freedom from the arrangement— And neither side blocked the door. Psychology can trace the road behind you, See how our help could be interpreted as chains, How protecting your autonomy Could make walking away seem the only way. Now I understand the distance, Even how the family came undone— But understanding why you left us Can't explain what happened once you'd gone. Because freedom doesn't need an enemy, And distance doesn't need a war. You'd already left the building, You'd already closed the door. There was nothing left to fight for, Nothing we were keeping from you. So if freedom was what you wanted, Why did hurting us become a priority too? I can understand the fracture, How hurt can tear a family through. How pain can harden into certainty, And leave no room for another view. I understand how black-and-white thinking Can turn a fracture into sides— How hurt can make the world seem simpler When there's no room left for gray inside. Maybe after everything that happened Being family felt impossible to you. I can understand how we got divided— Even if I don't believe we needed to. You could have chosen life without us, You could have said we'd had enough. I could grieve that choice and still accept it— If staying apart was something you thought we must. But separation wasn't where it ended, There were messages before the night was through A story sent straight to our other children That wasn't even remotely true. Complaints to the county forcing us to sell More ways to strike at what remained. You weren't trying just to leave us— You were seeking out ways to cause us pain. Then came the restrictions Finding new ways to lash out Trying to interfere with the sale of the property What was that all about? Would you leave your father homeless? Why keep opening another divide Why find ways to keep the hurt alive Long after you'd chosen goodbye. Freedom doesn't need an enemy, And distance doesn't need a war. You'd already left the building, You'd already closed the door. You didn't need to find new ways to hurt us To prove you didn't need us anymore. If freedom was what you wanted, What were you still fighting for? I have searched for understanding. I've tried to see this through your eyes. I've learned how fear of losing freedom Can change the way we recognize Love as pressure, help as power, A simple ask as one demand too much. And seeing through that different lens Explains why we fell out of touch. But understanding has its limits. It can tell me why you ran. It can show me how autonomy Might have mattered more than plans. It can even help me understand Why family ties became too tough But it still cannot explain to me Why being free was not enough. Because Freedom doesn't need an enemy. And distance doesn't need a war. You were free to choose a different life, Free to close the family door. You could leave the shop and leave us, You could decide that we'd lost your love. But if freedom was what you wanted, Why wasn't being free enough? You didn't have to come back. You didn't have to stay. You didn't have to call us family Once you pushed us away. But leaving wasn't all you chose— And that's what I still can't understand. You already had your freedom. Why did you need to keep wounding us after you left?
