Dodo bird, where have you gone? A flightless fowl, rare and distinct We cannot find you anymore Is it true you’ve gone extinct? You never flew above the trees You never crossed the ocean blue You never called the sailors home And no one looked quite just like you Dodo bird, dodo bird Where did you go? Are you hiding? We need to know Dodo bird, dodo bird Gone from the shore We keep on asking But you answer no more They found you, once upon a time On the island of Mauritius You didn’t know you ought to run For they would find you quite delicious You had no fear of boots or boats No clever plan, no great defense You trusted every hungry face You should have trusted common sense Dodo bird, dodo bird Where did you go? Are you hiding? We need to know Dodo bird, dodo bird Gone from the shore We keep on asking But you answer no more It hurts to know you’ve gone away You should still be here today We were not careful We were not kind We had a callous state of mind Why didn’t you all run away? Or try to hide from everyone? You never knew they’d chase you down And order, “One well done.” Oh, dodo bird, you’re gone, it’s true No feathers left, no beaks so grand Still we picture you somehow Waddling in your Wonderland Dodo bird, dodo bird Where did you go? Are you hiding? We need to know Dodo bird, dodo bird Gone from the shore We keep on asking But you answer no more
