Sunday hung upside down From the steeple at noon The ocean breeze left town As the tide slipped through the room The ceiling formed a second sky The floor forgot its name We tick-tocked around the clock While the sunlight tasted rain The riders passed unnoticed While the sky was crying The purple haze had lifted And sent the monkeys flying Tomorrow passed us yesterday With thunder in its shoes Tick-tack, click-clack—the hours cracked And bled electric blue The colors changed their alibis The mirrors split in two Tomorrow passed us yesterday Today's just passing through Midnight wore a paper crown And floated down the hall Knock-knock, who really cares If nobody knocked at all The moon swapped its shadow For a pocket full of soul The wires hum, the walls go numb And Alice fell down the hole The stairway led my lady Still looking for her glass We just twisted and turned And watched the future pass Tomorrow passed us yesterday With thunder in its shoes Tick-tack, click-clack—the hours cracked And bled electric blue The colors changed their alibis The mirrors split in two Tomorrow passed us yesterday Today's just passing through Tomorrow, tomorrow—the echo returned From somewhere out of view Today kept knocking at the door While yesterday walked right through Now is a needle Threading the eye Who is the color Refusing to fly Here becomes nowhere And when becomes why Again and again, the end begins How did we get so high Morning put its clothes on wrong And buttoned up the sea Splish-splash went the photograph For taking things not meant to be The alphabet misplaced its tongue The numbers learned to sing Ding-a-ling went the color red For Saturn's missing ring We folded all our shadows Into a paper sun Round and round tomorrow spun Till nothing had begun Tomorrow passed us yesterday With thunder in its shoes Tick-tack, click-clack—the hours cracked And bled electric blue The colors changed their alibis The mirrors split in two Tomorrow passed us yesterday Today's just passing through Tomorrow, tomorrow—the echo returned From somewhere out of view Today kept knocking at the door While yesterday walked right through Tick-tack, click-clack The echo turned blue Tomorrow, tomorrow And one becomes two Yesterday, yesterday Today passes through Tomorrow passed us yesterday And yesterday missed it too
