I thought I'd feel the empty spaces, The games and programs, birthdays too, The family dinners, get-togethers, Aaron dropping in like he'd often do. I thought I'd miss the constant motion, All the places we had to be— Funny, when the noise went quiet, I found a life waiting for me. Look what I got back— My time, my money, and my life. Quiet evenings, open weekends, Time to focus on being a wife. I spent so much energy trying to bring Two families together as one, I thought that I was losing something— Turns out my life has just begun. I love empty squares on my calendar. I Love deciding as we go. I Love that no one is filling our calendar Before we even know What we'd like to do that evening, Where we'd like to spend the day. There is freedom in discovering We can choose our own way. And I won't pretend I miss the spending— The open line of credit they'd come to know, No ceiling and no repayment plan, Just assuming it would continue to flow. Now I build the things I've dreamed of, Watch my business stretch and grow. We don't even need the money— I just love seeing where it can go. Look what I got back— Room to dream and room to breathe, I spent so long bringing families together, Giving everything in me. Then the life I tried so hard to build Was suddenly set free— And I found there was a whole new life Still waiting there for me. And there were four who waited While I tried to make two families one, Never asking me to choose them— Now they get the best to come. They'll get the trips and conversations, Cruises and ordinary afternoons, The dinners, laughter, celebrations, And the things we'll someday do. They'll get more of our attention, More of what these years can be— Not because I chose one family, But because one family kept choosing me. Rick and I are even closer now, That's the sweetest part of all. No one else's expectations Tell us when to jump or call. Sleeping in, waking in his arms, Just the two of us at home— Serving, traveling, laughing, Free to stay or free to roam. Look what we got back— Our time, our money, and our life. No one else controls the calendar, No one else gets to set the price. We've got years ahead to spend now On people, dreams and things we choose. I thought estrangement would break my heart— But I found those that left had worn me through. There is one thing I wish I could change: The story being told out there. I hate the lies attached to my name The things they tell to anyone who'll let them care But chasing every falsehood down Would steal the peace I've gained. They can tell the story they've decided— I still know my name. And maybe this is not my finest thought, But sometimes I confess— There's a tiny bit of satisfaction In knowing what comes next. The children who stood patiently While I gave so much away Will have the best of who we are In these good and golden days. And those who viewed our giving As a tap that wouldn't end, Who mistook a gift for something owed Again and again and again— They made their choice, Now we made ours. No revenge. No angry scenes. They wanted life without us. Now they get exactly what that means. Look what I got back— My time, my money, and my life. Look what we discovered When we refused to join their fight. More laughter, more adventure, More time for those who stayed. More mornings waking next to Rick, More freedom every day. I don't sit around and miss them. That's the truth I've come to see. I spent seventeen years making room for them. Now I'm making room for me. I thought the ending would feel empty. I had no idea how full. how free. how happy. how amazing our life would be.
