So if they've been teaching us Guiding every step we take What does that make us? Lab rats learning for their sake? Are we pets they're training To do tricks they find amusing? Or children they're raising With methods we're not choosing? Mirror shows a species proud Of achievements we didn't earn Speaking truths out loud Makes my stomach turn Monkeys with taaaaaaaa (MONKEYS WITH TABLETS!) Thinking we're so smart (MONKEYS WITH TABLETS!) Playing our little part Every app we think we mastered Someone else installed (MONKEYS WITH TABLETS!) And that hurts most of all Watch a chimp use tools now Scientists applaud and cheer That's exactly how We must look from up there Celebrating our computers Our rockets and our phones While our cosmic tutors Watch us from their throne(s?) Mirror shows a species proud Of achievements we didn't earn Speaking truths out loud Makes my stomach turn Monkeys with tablets (MONKEYS WITH TABLETS!) Thinking we're so smart (MONKEYS WITH TABLETS!) Playing our little part Every app we think we mastered Someone else installed (MONKEYS WITH TABLETS!) And that hurts most of all But maybe... That's not insulting Maybe that's just true We're learning, we're resulting From a process bleeding through If monkeys can paint pictures And dolphins can use tools Maybe we're just creatures In someone else's schools Monkeys with tablets (MONKEYS WITH TABLETS!) And maybe that's okay (MONKEYS WITH TABLETS!) Learning more each day Every gift that we've been given Helps us grow and sprawl (MONKEYS WITH TABLETS!) But we're learning after all
