The Shadow is Back (House Is Back - Remix)

[Intro] I locked the door The house unlocked itself She’s back [Verse 1] Same key in the same chipped bowl Same coat still taking her side of the hook I say her name to prove I can The hallway says it better than I do Light from the kitchen falls on nothing Nothing holds the shape of her stand I blink The shape remains A darker dark inside the dark I planned [Pre-Chorus] The shadow is back In the chair she kept The shadow is back And the chair accepts [Chorus] The shadow is back She doesn’t knock The shadow is back The house does not I set one plate The second waits The shadow is back And it knows the way [Verse 2] I moved the lamp so the corner would fail The corner learned a longer trail Her perfume isn’t perfume now It’s the air refusing to leave the stair I talk like a man who still pays the bills The bills don’t answer She does Not in words In the pause where her words were I sleep on the couch The bed stays made By morning the blanket has chosen her weight [Pre-Chorus] The shadow is back Where I left the light on The shadow is back And the light is wrong [Chorus] The shadow is back She doesn’t knock The shadow is back The house does not I set one plate The second waits The shadow is back And it knows the way [Violin Solo] [Bridge] I asked the dark to keep her I did not ask it to return her It doesn’t bargain It furnishes Her side of the bed Her side of the cup Her side of every room I enter If I leave, the shadow keeps the key If I stay, I become the doorway [Verse 3] Coat on the hook Hook on the wall Wall knows her height I don’t correct it Plate for no one No one sits The chair still warms I say go It sits closer [Final Chorus] The shadow is back I don’t lock up The shadow is back I set the cup Not a ghost in the attic noise A wife-shaped dark that knows my voice The shadow is back The shadow is back And I answer it [Outro] She’s back I know
