[Car pulls into driveway Kansas City] They arrive that evening. Pull into driveway. Mom Rosie meets them, says dogs were good, plants watered. Marie sorts bags, takes laundry to laundry room. Rolling out of the bag onto the floor... is Penelope. Marie says, I know I checked this bag before we left. How did you get in there? Well I'll call and let them know we found you and will return you. No answer. It's only a doll. She calls the bed-and-breakfast. Recording says number no longer in service. She searches the address. Web result shows bed-and-breakfast closed more than five years. Pictures of rundown, dilapidated building. She calls Larry, he gets same answer. So she wipes off the doll, washes her clothes, mends them with needle and thread, wood filler and sandpaper for little cracks, fresh paint, fresh lacquer. Perfect cherub of innocence. Places her in Elena's room among her things. Week proceeds. Nothing amiss.
