Nobody Knows I'm Hungry

Verse 1 They laugh when I walk in with another cheap meal in my hands. “Again?” “Don't you ever eat something real?” I laugh along with them so they won't notice how badly those words hurt. They see a plastic wrapper. They see something quick and cheap. They don't see what's left in my bank account. Verse 2 I learned how to count coins before I learned how to count calories. I stand in grocery stores and put things back. Not because I don't want them. Because I can't afford them. So I choose the cheapest thing and tell myself it will be enough. Even when it isn't. Pre-Chorus My stomach has been hurting for so long that sometimes I don't know if it's hunger or just sadness anymore. Chorus Nobody knows I'm hungry. Nobody knows I can't afford more. They laugh at what I'm eating while I'm trying not to cry. They say, “You could eat better.” If only they knew how hard I'm trying just to eat at all. Nobody knows I'm hungry. And I'm too ashamed to say it. Verse 3 I tell them I'm not hungry when someone offers me food. I say I ate earlier. I say I'm saving it for later. Little lies that keep my secret safe. Because admitting the truth feels worse than going home hungry. Bridge At night, my kitchen is quiet. The fridge is almost empty. I open it anyway. Maybe something changed. Maybe somehow there will be enough this time. There never is. Chorus Nobody knows I'm hungry. Nobody knows I count every cent. Nobody knows how many meals I've skipped so I could make the next week. They only see the cheap food on my table. They don't see the fear behind it. They don't see me lying awake at night, listening to my stomach and pretending I don't hear it. Verse 4 Tomorrow they'll laugh again. I'll smile again. I'll eat whatever I can afford. And maybe someone will say, “Why do you always eat that?” I'll shrug my shoulders like it doesn't matter. Like I'm choosing this. Like I don't dream about opening my fridge and not having to calculate what I can survive on. Chorus Nobody knows I'm hungry. And maybe that's the saddest part. I could tell them. I could finally say the words. But shame keeps them locked inside my chest. So I swallow my pride instead of a proper meal. I smile when they laugh. I pretend it doesn't hurt. Because they see cheap food. I see the only food I could afford. Outro Tomorrow morning I'll wake up hungry again. I'll get dressed. I'll smile. I'll say I'm fine. And nobody will know that behind every cheap meal was a woman just trying to make it through another day. Nobody knows I'm hungry. Nobody knows.
