Crown of Thorns

[Verse 1] She wore the salt of Alba On velvet and on skin A child of candle smoke Born where the storms begin The court laid silk like chains The tongue was sweet, then split One vow for every hand One knife for every wit [Pre-Chorus] And the bells went black When the news came down Her name still sang Through a broken crown [Chorus] Mary, Mary Hold your name Mary, Mary Through the flame Crowns will rust But grief remains Mary, Mary Stay in our veins [Verse 2] She trusted morning faces She fed them at her side They bowed with polished words Then sold her blood for pride The tower kept her shadow The lake kept every cry The hawk above the field Watched mercy walk on by [Pre-Chorus] And the bells went black When the news came down Her name still sang Through a broken crown [Chorus] Mary, Mary Hold your name Mary, Mary Through the flame Crowns will rust But grief remains Mary, Mary Stay in our veins [Bridge] If love was once a harbor It turned to iron rain If trust was once a white rose It learned the shape of pain She knelt before the winter With the dawn too far to save Still her voice rose like a psalm From the dark of the grave [Final Chorus] Mary, Mary Hold your name Mary, Mary Through the flame Crowns will rust But grief remains Mary, Mary Stay in our veins Mary, Mary Stone and light Mary, Mary Burning bright Loyal heart And wounded reign Mary, Mary Call again
