WHAT I OWE THE ROOM

I talked across Mara when she tried to finish. I laughed when the table went rigid. I left Dan holding the sentence I started, then called the silence proof that I was cornered. I know the move: take every face in, pull every hard look under my skin, say I'm the reason the whole night split, make my collapse the center of it. That isn't listening. That's another takeover. Making myself small still crowds the table. So here is the part with my fingerprints: I cut you short. I made the joke. I didn't step in. My part comes out in my own voice. I take the consequence, not your choice. A broken sentence can remain that way. Silence doesn't clear the mark I made. I keep my answer within my reach. No one at this table has to speak. One chair turns sideways. Someone says, "You always—" then bites it back while another looks away. I feel the old answer climb into place: explain every motive, absorb every face. Be monster, be mediator, make it complete, give one clean reason for the heat in the seats. But your held-back sentence does not become mine. My fear of the gap doesn't grant me the right. DON'T MAKE ME THE MOUTH FOR THE WHOLE DAMN ROOM! I breathe through the urge. I let the sentence stay unfinished. My part comes out in my own voice. I take the consequence, not your choice. If a sentence comes, I leave it intact. If nothing comes, I still own the act. I keep my answer within my reach. No one at this table has to speak. You point at the place where I talked over you. I don't ask you to soften it. You say there were nights I never saw. I don't fill them in. Someone else keeps both hands flat on the table. I don't call that peace. I know where my reach ends. I do not call the ending clean. I WON'T DISAPPEAR AND CALL IT ACCOUNTABILITY! My part comes out in my own voice. The rest remains each person's choice. I leave every silence the shape it takes. I keep my answer tied to what I made. What I owe the room is this: my answer remains whether anyone speaks, my part in my voice, and no claim on the rest. Your sentence can end where I don't know. Mine ends with what I chose.
