Sleep is a Door

[Intro] The street looks ordinary Until your eyes close [Verse 1] Kids learn the house numbers Parents learn to lock the dark A man the law could not keep Learned a hallway no lock can hold He does not walk the sidewalk He waits where tired minds go [Refrain] Sleep is a door Not a mercy Sleep is a door And he has the key Stay awake If you can The dream is sharper Than the street [Verse 2] Boiler heat under the block A laugh that is not a laugh Red and shadow in the steam A name scratched into sleep You run down a school hall That lengthens when you need it short You wake with the mark The night keeps the rest [Rise] Don’t nod off Don’t trust the quiet The last safe place Was never your bed [Refrain] Sleep is a door Not a mercy Sleep is a door And he has the key [Guitar Solo] [Bridge] They burned the body They did not burn the rule If you can die in a dream The morning will not save you Count the minutes Not the sheep [Final Refrain] Sleep is a door Not a mercy Sleep is a door And he has the key Stay awake If you can The dream already Knows your street [Outro] The street looks ordinary Until your eyes close
