Pareto's Carousel
The fair's been standing since the world began, Someone's at the lever, running the plan, A Lion or a Fox, they take their turns, While you're on your horse, and the whole thing churns, Wind in your face, what could feel more free? You never look down at who's turning the key. Round and round goes the carousel, Lions and foxes, you know them well, You think you're riding, but hear me now — You're the one who's turning the wheel somehow. The Lions take the lever, standing proud, Order and discipline, shouted loud, Smooth and steady, the ride feels so right, Til they tighten the bolts a little too tight, The wheels grind slower, your smile starts to fade, You miss the thrill you felt when you first got played. Round and round goes the carousel, Lions and foxes, you know them well, You think you're riding, but hear me now — You're the one who's turning the wheel somehow. When enough of the riders start to moan, The Foxes slide in and take the throne, Loosening everything with a velvet smile, Oh it feels so easy for a little while, Til the bolts go rattling, the whole thing shakes, And you're praying for the Lion's iron brakes. Lion to Fox and back again, Same old story, a different skin, You think the power's up there somewhere, But your own frustration is the hand on the gear. Round and round goes the carousel, Never stopping, oh can't you tell, It's not their hands, it's your own sway, You pass the lever, paw to paw, every single day.
