After twenty hours of hitchhiking from Bogotá, Julian arrived in Quito. His journey took him through the cloud forest of Pasto and the volcanic landscapes of Ibarra. Exhausted, he was looking for a place to rest. It was in a square in the historic center that he met three local men, who gave him a glimpse of the highest capital city in the world. ******************************************* © Copyright (2025) ******************************************* Verse 1 High on the mountain, the great capital gleams, A world heritage site, born of ancient dreams. The Plaza Grande shows its proud stance, A long history offering its true chance. I see monuments where the people pause, Guided by strong and important local laws. Chorus Cold winds softly blow. Old tales we now know. High peaks brightly glow. Where deep rivers flow. Verse 2 A grand old Basílica stands with solemn grace, Its deep importance in this sacred place. I walk through San Francisco's old terrain, Feeling joyful, free from any pain. The air is filled with lively, rhythmic sound, Where peaceful simple rituals are found. Chorus Cold winds softly blow. Old tales we now know. High peaks brightly glow. Where deep rivers flow. Verse 3 The Mitad del Mundo shows its great divide, Where two hemispheres stand side by side. I see the grand Panecillo's high ascent, A spiritual journey, heaven-sent. These strong local customs feel so truly fine, A special feeling, wonderfully divine. Chorus Cold winds softly blow. Old tales we now know. High peaks brightly glow. Where deep rivers flow. Verse 4 Three local men with warm smiles then appeared, Showing their homes, where true joy is revered. We shared quick laughs and a simple warm dish, A great welcome, better than any true wish. They spoke of their lives with proud regard, Building with me a true, strong loyal bond. Chorus Cold winds softly blow. Old tales we now know. High peaks brightly glow. Where deep rivers flow.
