Boardwalk arcades stayed open too long, cheap radios played from parked cars near the beach, and somewhere almost every night, someone carried a half-empty Shangles can through the warm air while music echoed across the shoreline. Shangles Nights was originally written as part of a summer promotion for the Shangles drink campaign — a brightly colored line of heavily caffeinated soft drinks the band had jokingly helped market during the coastal tour season of 1995. Nobody expected the song itself to outlast the promotion. Built around simple hooks, shouted harmonies and messy beach-party energy, the track leaned fully into the exaggerated summer aesthetic surrounding the brand: boardwalk nights, portable stereos, cheap arcade lights, sticky cans and endless noise near the water. By then, Darek Stargazer had already become a familiar presence around the Shangles. What started a year earlier as an unexpected encounter had quietly turned into friendship, rehearsals, late-night drives, beach parties and eventually music. His rougher vocal tone balanced naturally against the brighter voices of Joellyn, Marcy and Tina, giving the song a looser and more chaotic chemistry than the group originally planned. Marcy later described the recording sessions as: “Basically four idiots, too much sugar, broken speakers and somebody always spilling drinks on the mixing desk.” At the time, nobody around the band considered Shangles Nights important. It was loud, unserious, heavily commercial and built almost entirely around atmosphere instead of meaning. But years later, the song survived in a way nobody expected. Not because of the drink campaign. Not because of the charts. But because it captured a version of youth that still believed every summer would return exactly the same way again. ________________________________________________________________ [Intro] Ba-da-da-da, ba-da-da-da Ice cold Shangles! (ice cold!) Ba-da-da-da, ba-da-da-da Turn the radio louder! [Verse 1] Flip-flops slapping on the boardwalk (hey!) Boombox duct-taped to the cooler French fries spilling in the sand Ketchup on a suntanned shoulder (woo!) [Verse 2] Red Voltage spray in the air Jet skis buzzing out on the bay (come on!) Three girls laughing way too loud Best damn day since school let out [Pre-Chorus] Sun going down, music going up (turn it up!) Trucks full of kids screaming at the lights Bare feet dirty, heads gone wild (all night!) Salt on our skin, speakers blown sky high [Chorus] Beach Boys Live for Shangles nights (Shangles nights!) Cold cans dripping down our hands One more song, bass too loud (turn it louder!) Sunburn lines above our tights Beach Boys Live for Shangles days (Shangles days!) Barefoot dancing on the sand Cheap smoke floating in the haze Waves still crashing by the stand Ba-da-da-da, ba-da-da-da Ice cold Shangles! (ice cold!) Ba-da-da-da, ba-da-da-da Turn the radio louder! [Verse 3] I was walking past the arcade lights Half sunburned and half asleep Saw three girls dancing on a Jeep hood (hey!) One nailed me with an ice cube in the teeth [Verse 4] She wore shades even after dark One sang every single word (sing it!) Now we’re cruising down the shoreline Windows rattling, night wind in my shirt [Pre-Chorus] Sun going down, music going up (turn it up!) Trucks full of kids screaming at the lights Bare feet dirty, heads gone wild (all night!) Salt on our skin, speakers blown sky high [Chorus] Beach Boys Live for Shangles nights (Shangles nights!) Cold cans dripping down our hands One more song, bass too loud (turn it louder!) Sunburn lines above our tights Beach Boys Live for Shangles days (Shangles days!) Barefoot dancing on the sand Cheap smoke floating in the haze Waves still crashing by the stand Ba-da-da-da, ba-da-da-da Ice cold Shangles! (ice cold!) Ba-da-da-da, ba-da-da-da Turn the radio louder! [Bridge] Radio static cracking on the shoreline Parking lot lights and tangled wires Nobody here wants this night to end We’re still wide awake and feeling alive Ba-da-da-da, ba-da-da-da… (yeah yeah!) [Final Chorus] Beach Boys Live for Shangles nights (Shangles nights!) Wet towels hanging off the doors Singing off-key, dancing off-beat (come on!) Sand in the floor mats, all over the floor Beach Boys Live for Shangles dreams (Shangles dreams!) Last cold can, last slow song Nobody wants to head back home Boardwalk radios sing along Ba-da-da-da, ba-da-da-da Ice cold Shangles… (ice cold!) Ba-da-da-da, ba-da-da-da Beach party all night long! [Outro] Stereo fading near the water Still got sand inside our bags… Summer ain’t over yet…
