Paper finds the skin Between two fingers The one thin place A cut knows how to linger Gum on the sole I work it free Two steps later It finds me Every small hinge In the day comes loose I keep the feet moving That is the use I will still walk the day I will still walk the day Nothing that stuck to the shoe Gets to come in The light in that house Is already on Reach for the can It answers empty I meant to go Yesterday The list I wrote Still waits on the counter The store is closed In my favor Every small hinge In the day comes loose I keep the feet moving That is the use I will still walk the day I will still walk the day Nothing that stuck to the shoe Gets to come in The light in that house Is already on The pile gets taller I do not bow to it The last stretch of road Is already spoken for Kitchen light Through the front glass Someone says my name Like the day did not happen I will still walk the day I will still walk the day Nothing that stuck to the shoe Gets to come in The light in that house Is already on They are the light I walk it toward The shoe is clean enough The can can wait The house is lit That is the day
