29. Take My Hand, Poor Pip | Act IV: The Last Ways Home
[The Scene] Following the violent storm and Starbuck’s inability to act against his captain, attention turns to the traumatised Pip, who remains deeply affected by his abandonment at sea. Entering Ahab’s cabin, the frightened boy encounters an unexpected tenderness from the man whose obsession has brought so much danger upon the crew. Recognising something of his own suffering in Pip’s shattered confidence, Ahab offers him his hand and allows him to remain close, providing comfort and reassurance. For a brief moment, the captain’s hardened exterior gives way to genuine compassion, revealing the humanity still buried beneath his obsession. Yet his determination to pursue Moby Dick remains unchanged. [Verse 1] I hear your footsteps falter by my door, And see your shadow cross the cabin floor. The boy whose bells once brightened every day, Now starts at every creak and turns away. [Verse 2] I know the boat went on to claim its prize, And left you where the sea met empty skies. Your body came aboard, yet something stayed, Adrift where you were lonely and afraid. [Chorus] Take my hand, poor Pip, and sit with me, I know what can be taken by the sea. I'll give you shelter till the morning light, And share your silence in the watch of night. [Verse 3] I bear a hurt the years have failed to mend, A wound I keep beside me to the end. Mine sounds in ivory upon the floor, While yours is water with no distant shore. [Verse 4] I've used this hand to point beyond the foam, And steer us ever farther out from home. Tonight I let it rest within your own, A kindness I have scarcely ever shown. [Chorus] Take my hand, poor Pip, and sit with me, I know what can be taken by the sea. I'll give you shelter till the morning light, And share your silence in the watch of night. [Verse 5] The white whale holds its place within my mind, A purpose that I cannot leave behind. But here my hands may shelter you from fear, And for a while, poor Pip, I'll keep you near. [Verse 6] You need not raise your bells to earn your place, Nor force a smile upon your frightened face. Rest by the lamp until the shadows cease, And let us have this little hour of peace. [Chorus] Take my hand, poor Pip, and sit with me, I know what can be taken by the sea. I'll give you shelter till the morning light, And share your silence in the watch of night. [Outro] Beyond the door the darkened waters sweep, The shape I seek still haunts me in my sleep. Yet here your hand lies sheltered within mine, A moment's warmth against the ocean brine.
