Blacktail at the Gate

[Verse 1] By the kingdom gate, he stands Tom Nook with worn-out hands Counting coins in the rain Keeping watch through old iron chains He heard it first from peddler mouths From roadmen east and earl's old south A wolf with ash in his teeth A black-tail curse beneath the wreath [Pre-Chorus] They spoke his name like prayer Then dropped their gaze to the stair Blacktail rides on the frost And every loyal torch is crossed [Chorus] Blacktail, Blacktail Wretched wolf at the wall (Blacktail) Blacktail, Blacktail He swore Bonnie's Kingdom would fall Blacktail, Blacktail Hear the gate bells moan (Blacktail) Blacktail, Blacktail He wants the throne for his own [Verse 2] They said he came from the swamp With a crown of bone and a broken stomp Eyes like coals in a sack Leaving winter in his track He taxed the bread, he broke the vow Made mothers kneel before his plow And every bridge he claimed by flame Carved his hunger into name [Pre-Chorus] So Tom Nook keeps the ledge With a lantern and a pledge If the wolf comes through tonight He'll ring the horn and stand and fight [Chorus] Blacktail, Blacktail Wretched wolf at the wall (Blacktail) Blacktail, Blacktail He swore Bonnie's Kingdom would fall Blacktail, Blacktail Hear the gate bells moan (Blacktail) Blacktail, Blacktail He wants the throne for his own [Bridge] Now the banners bend in dread And the old kings bow their heads But one small watchman at the gate Holds the story of that hate Tom Nook, keep your post By the stones and salted coast If Blacktail comes with fang and fire Let the kingdom rise up higher [Final Chorus] Blacktail, Blacktail Wretched wolf at the wall (Blacktail) Blacktail, Blacktail He swore Bonnie's Kingdom would fall Blacktail, Blacktail Still the bells will ring (Blacktail) Blacktail, Blacktail And Tom Nook guards the king
