I started with a broken heart, And questions I couldn't explain. I found a way to tell my story, One song at a time through the pain. I never knew where it would lead me, Or what the finished picture would be. But every song became a puzzle piece, Revealing something more to me. Some pieces held the happy memories, The laughter and the love we knew. Some held the sacrifices made, And all the things we tried to do. Some pieces brought back disappointment, Some helped me understand the pain. And others showed me all the goodness That those years would always contain. Every song was necessary, Every piece belonged somewhere. Some were filled with joy and laughter, Some with sorrow, loss, and prayer. I couldn't leave the hard ones out And still say the picture was true. Every song was necessary To understand the life that we lived through. Sometimes I'd find another piece That changed the way I saw the rest. A question led to understanding, And helped me see how I'd been blessed. Each new perspective brought new meaning, And lessons I had yet to learn. The pieces hadn't changed at all— My understanding took a turn. And then I started noticing How much of that picture was bright. Seventeen years of love and living, So many moments filled with light. There had been pain along the journey, And heartbreak I could not foresee. But none of that erased the goodness Or all those years had given me. Every song was necessary, Every piece belonged somewhere. Some were filled with joy and laughter, Some with sorrow, loss, and prayer. I couldn't leave the good ones out And still say the picture was true. Every song was necessary To understand the life that we lived through. I won't let the final chapter Rewrite the story of those years. I won't let the painful ending Turn all the memories into tears. The love was real, the good was real, And so were all the things we gave. The picture holds a thousand blessings That the ending cannot take away! Every song was necessary, Every piece helped me to see Seventeen years of love and goodness, And all those years have given me. The ending couldn't steal the beauty, Or undo the love I knew. Every song was necessary— And every piece of it was true! I couldn't leave the hard ones out. I couldn't leave the good ones out. Every song was necessary to complete an accurate picture. Now I can stand back from the picture And see what I couldn't see before. Seventeen years of life worth loving— And so much goodness to be grateful for. With every piece now in its place, I'm grateful for the life I've led. The picture's part of who I am, And there's a beautiful life ahead.
