[Intro: dry spoken, brisk] I got invited to a potluck down in the swamp. They said bring something, so I brought deviled eggs. I don’t know. Seemed appropriate. Apparently there’s a devil down there. Walks slow, everybody’s running, he’s walking. Maybe somebody’s carrying him. Or maybe he’s just slow. Anyway. [Verse 1] The devil’s in the details. That’s what they say. But where’s the angel? Nobody ever says the angel’s in the details. I invited one for posterity. She failed to appear. Apparition problem. So I ate her egg. Deviled. Obviously. [Verse 2] Then somebody says there’s a snake in the grass. Yeah. It’s a swamp. Where do you want him, on the buffet table? Although… there are eggs. Never mind. Apparently there’s another snake wearing a suit. Who wears a suit to a swamp potluck? Maybe he’s the devil. Devil in disguise. There we go. Details. [Refrain] Everybody brought something. Somebody brought a demon. Somebody brought a snake. Somebody brought another snake with a dress code. I brought deviled eggs. We’re gonna make this guy feel important. Feed the devil. Keep him polite. Shell. Egg. Shell. [Verse 3] There’s a spider. He’s got bounce. Eight legs. Probably helps. Bigfoot’s here. Nobody believes in him. Nobody. He’s standing right there. Still… nobody. Anyway. Now I got swamp gas. Or swamp ass. Depends what I ate. [low mutter] 8-8-8… 7-8-9… Same swamp. Different ass. Yeah. I’m keeping that. [Turn] Turns out the devil isn’t haunting the swamp. Hell’s having a wildfire. He’s vacationing. Swamp’s cooler. Literally. Somebody told him, “Go to Hell.” He can’t. Evacuated. Somebody said, “Hell will freeze over.” He said, “God, I hope so.” Okay. I like him. [Verse 4] Somebody asked me to play devil’s advocate. Why? He’s standing right there. He can advocate for himself. Speak of the devil. Actually… speak TO the devil. I’m not his social secretary. Then somebody said, “The devil made me do it.” He looked over. “Don’t put that shit on me.” Fair. Something about Georgia. And a fiddle. I didn’t ask. [Bridge: warm, intimate] After the potluck I invited the devil out for a drink. Figured I’d see if I could quench his thirst. [DROP] Turns out… I can. Huh. Good to know. [Groove returns] Two drinks later he’s following me. Well shit. Apparently you quench a stray devil once… [groove answers] Somebody said, “Better the devil you know.” Well… I know him now. Three eggs. Two drinks. Doesn’t tip. I’m reconsidering. Maybe that’s why he walks slow. He’s thirsty. Or waiting for a ride. Could be both. Fine. Get in. You’re shotgun. [Outro: stripping down] And Greg’s over there. Same place he’s always been. Drinking Baileys from a shoe. Somebody asked what happened to the swamp. Nothing happened to the swamp. You all just showed up. Greg was already here. He tried ambition once. It broke his nap. Somebody yelled, “RAISE HELL!” No. Don’t. It’s already on fire. [PAUSE] Anyway. I’ve got one deviled egg left. Anybody? No? Fine. I’ll give it to the devil. He’s had a rough week. Besides… the devil you feed is the devil you know. Hmm. That’s probably not the saying. Anyway.
