Dance me through the years

[Verse 1] We hit the floor in saddle shoes Doing the twist in borrowed light You spun me past the jukebox hum And I forgot the shape of night We mashed the mashed potato slow Then walked it out in plastic smiles Your hand on mine, my heart on glass We stayed right there for miles [Pre-Chorus] Then came the pony, then the stroll The jerk, the skate, the shimmy roll Your laugh cut through my weary bones Like Saturday still had a home [Chorus] Dance me through the years Dance me through the tears (keep me moving) From the twist to the moonwalk We don’t let go Dance me through the years Dance me through the tears (hold me closer) If the room goes dark We still glow [Verse 2] We did the loco-motion again Then disco lights in thrift-store chains You threw a hustle, I missed the beat Still you pulled me back in place Then came the breakin’ on the floor A windmill through the open pain We laughed so hard our throats went raw Like we could outrun rain [Pre-Chorus] Then the running man, the butterfly The Cabbage Patch and butterfly You taught me every nervous step Like love could pass the test [Chorus] Dance me through the years Dance me through the tears (keep me moving) From the twist to the moonwalk We don’t let go Dance me through the years Dance me through the tears (hold me closer) If the room goes dark We still glow [Bridge] We did the Macarena side by side The Electric Slide on shaking knees Then the backstreet steps, the criss-cross Like we were twelve and seventeen And when the morning split the blinds You smiled like you knew my name I’d take every clumsy era If it meant you’d dance the same [Chorus] Dance me through the years Dance me through the tears (keep me moving) From the twist to the moonwalk We don’t let go Dance me through the years Dance me through the tears (hold me closer) If the room goes dark We still glow
