Planet Formerly Known As Monkey Island

[Verse 1] Started as a rock in the dark Then fur showed up in the trees Little hands Big dreams Bad balance Jumping branch to branch Bruised knees We crowned ourselves with banana peels Built thrones out of wet sand Called this spinning jungle home Didn’t even understand [Chorus] Planet of the apes Formerly known as [crescendo] monkey island Now called Earth Same old claws on a different silence Planet of the apes We just gave the rock a brand new name Planet of the apes Still flinging chaos Calling it "change" [Verse 2] We stood up Put on jackets Traded vines for parking lots Drew borders in the river mud Sold the air in little plots We point telescopes at the sky Act surprised we're feeling small But the mirror in the bathroom Still tells the truth of it all [Chorus] [Bridge] Put a flag in the dirt Said "ours" Built towers just to touch the clouds But the laugh in our throat That wild sharp note Keeps slipping out loud (oh oh) Call it progress Call it pain Call it anything you choose Under all these shiny labels It’s still bare feet Same old shoes [Chorus]
