The heroine sits with her older brother at a table by the window. Her brother has just explained, in broad strokes, how the man recently returned to the country to settle down for work, and how he had once tried to arrange a meeting between the two of them —a meeting that never quite happened. The heroine suddenly understands. Yet she is not truly surprised. A flash of memories from when she was sixteen rushes through her mind. After a moment of quiet thought, she lifts the latte that still holds a trace of warmth and looks across the table at her brother. *The dialogue between the siblings: Good thing I called to ask. Otherwise you probably wouldn’t even remember to tell me about this. Well… I figured he’d reach out to you himself. Didn’t you once say he was a bit of a playboy? Oh? Did I say that? Didn’t you also cover for him all the time? Oh? Did I? Yes you did. You guys always stick up for each other. Ha! Kiddo, you sound like you’ve got us all figured out. Come on. That was ages ago. Who hasn’t been young and stupid? Back in high school you were posting all kinds of weird stuff online. Weird stuff? You’ve got the nerve to bring that up! If you hadn’t been standing there making things up, he wouldn’t have thought I liked some other guy. And he wouldn’t have believed that the elegy I wrote for my poor Gabby and Finn— was some kind of curse meant for him. Even if I hadn’t said anything, he probably would’ve misunderstood anyway. With the way the two of you carry that whole not-good-enough thing… where else could it lead? Well… there you have it. You asked him to contact me. And he didn’t… Anyway— I should get going. And from now on— don’t worry about my life. ——— Scene 2 – Night. In her study, the heroine takes out an old notebook from a drawer and opens to a page inside. There lies a poem she wrote ten years ago. Do Not Look at Me I told you— do not look at me. Spirits, what spell have you cast upon me? I cannot move. I told you— do not look at me. Stars, on a night like this, because of you, even sapphire loses its shine. I told you— do not look at me. Waters of the lake, the mermaid will not return to the sea. The realm your touch has reached is now her home. Do not look at me unless you can tell me that mountains are not so high, that roads are not so far, that waters are not so deep, that the sun and the moon may embrace. Do not look at me unless you can see the moment when the sky is set alight. An angel glides past the edge of the clouds, and the morning light falls softly upon my lashes. Do not look at me unless— Do not look at me. —————————————————— These lyrics were written and are owned by Rachel’s Original (Rachel Liu). Please do not copy, share, or adapt them without permission.
