[Verse 1] Midnight on the glass the whole city runs red into blue blue into white Names disappear from shopfronts faces dissolve in passing headlights Water finds everything the dust on the ledge oil on the street a footprint someone left in mud and carries it down [Pre-Chorus] For a moment from up here it almost looks forgiven [Chorus] Let it rain until it's clean Wash every window, wash every street Let it rain until it's clean Then tell me what clean really means [Verse 2] There's lipstick on a glass three floors below blood on a pavement six blocks east chalk on a wall a name on a door mud on somebody's shoes coming home at four The rain knows what to do with all of these give it time they're gone [Pre-Chorus] But behind the windows the lights stay on and water cannot get that far [Chorus] Let it rain until it's clean Wash every window, wash every street Let it rain until it's clean Then tell me what clean really means [Bridge] Wash the glass wash the stone wash the hands that came back home Wash the stairwell wash the door Wash the place where something was But what about the thing itself? Where does that go? [Instrumental] [Final Chorus] Let it rain until it's clean Wash the evidence from every street Let it rain until it's clean Until the colours bleed Let it rain until it's clean Then tell me what clean really means [Outro] Morning finds the rooftops shining The gutters empty The windows clear And somewhere behind one of them someone remembers everything.
