Heave, boys, heave – for Gdańsk town! The Swedish blockaders are bearing down! Heave, boys, heave – the white flag flies! For the Commonwealth fleet rides the tides! On the twenty-eighth of November's chill, When the Baltic wind blew sharp and shrill, The Swedish squadron blocked the bay – But the Polish fleet would have its day. From Gdańsk harbour they slipped their lines, Four galleons strong and battle signs, With Dickmann leading the bold attack – And there was no turning back! Heave, boys, heave – for Gdańsk town! The Swedish blockaders are bearing down! Heave, boys, heave – the white flag flies! For the Commonwealth fleet rides the tides! The Święty Jerzy flew the flag, The Wodnik followed, never to lag, The Król Dawid thundered broadside flame – And the Swedes would remember that name! They took the Tigern – their flagship proud, Sank another beneath the cloud, Stiernsköld fell with his gallant crew – The Polish colours broke through! Heave, boys, heave – for Gdańsk town! The Swedish blockaders are bearing down! Heave, boys, heave – the white flag flies! For the Commonwealth fleet rides the tides! Three hundred Swedes went to the deep, While Polish hearts their promise keep. Forty-seven souls from the Commonwealth side, But their honour could not be denied. The blockade was broken, the sea ran red – And the white eagle reigned in stead! From Oliwa's shore to the open main, The Commonwealth ruled the wave again! So heave, boys, heave – for Gdańsk town! The Swedish blockaders are beaten down! Heave, boys, heave – the white flag flies! For the Commonwealth fleet – forever rides!
