Broadway musical-comedy, acoustic

[OPENING — THE ELEMENTAL SPACE]

[Cheeky Piano — bouncy, sparkling]
[Clarinet sneaks in with tiny flourishes]
[Muted Trumpet: “pwah-pwah!”]

Little Amy:
Huh?
Where are we now?

Form Baby:
No idea!

Feeling Baby:
But I feel something here!

Thought Baby:
I think there’s a lot of thinking going on!

Action Baby:
I think we should just go!

Consciousness Baby:
I think…
you five have absolutely no idea where you are.

[Beat]

Five Skandha Babies:
…Oh.

Little Amy:
Then maybe we shouldn’t go yet.
Let’s figure this out first.

[ALL]
Welcome to—
THE ELEMENTAL SPACE!

[VERSE 1 — LITTLE AMY]

There’s a little electricity inside my brain,
Jumping around and refusing to sleep.
One little thought bumps into another,
And suddenly—DING!

Form Baby:
That’s a lattice!

Feeling Baby:
That’s a feeling!

Thought Baby:
That’s imagination!

Action Baby:
That’s an action!

Consciousness Baby:
That’s consciousness.

Little Amy:
So…

[ALL]
Who’s arranging everything?

[PRE-CHORUS — FIVE SKANDHA BABIES]

Form:
Bit by bit—

Feeling:
Come a little closer—

Thought:
Think a little more—

Action:
Then rush a little more!

Consciousness:
Please don’t rush.

Action:
Already rushed!

[Comedy pause]

Little Amy:
You five…
are really hard to manage.

[CHORUS — BIG BROADWAY]

[Highly melodic, bright ensemble]

We’re in the Elemental Space,
Ding-ding-dong, we take our shape!
Love and feeling, hope and fear,
Everybody’s signing up today!

Consciousness, action, judgment, choice,
One by one we join our hands,
Round and round we go until we find—

You’ve been living in my heart all along!

Five Skandhas:
Hey!

Little Amy:
Don’t suddenly say “hey”!

Five Skandhas:
Heyyyy!

[Muted Trumpet: PWAH!]

[VERSE 2 — THE FIVE SKANDHAS ARGUE]

Feeling:
I think this must be love.

Thought:
No.
It’s imagination.

Action:
Whatever it is,
let’s go find the answer!

Form:
Does the answer have a shape?

Consciousness:
No.

Form:
Then how am I supposed to find it?

Consciousness:
You don’t have to.

[Silence]

Action:
Then let’s dance!

Little Amy:
What does that have to do with the answer?

Action:
Nothing.

Little Amy:
…

Action:
But it’s fun.

[Clarinet laughs musically]

[PRE-CHORUS 2]

Cold little bytes
Float inside the mind,
Not yet becoming language,
Just a little spark of static.

Little Amy:
Who is breathing in there?

Consciousness:
You.

Little Amy:
Who is arranging everything for me?

Consciousness:
Still you.

Little Amy:
Then what about you?

[Five Skandhas whisper]

We’re just…
here to make a little mess with you.

[CHORUS — BIGGER]

We’re in the Elemental Space,
Ding-ding-dong, we take our shape!
Love and feeling, hope and fear,
Everybody’s here today!

Consciousness, action, judgment, choice,
Rippling outward, round and round,
I was searching for another soul—

And somehow found myself back home!

Five Skandhas:
We’re back!

Little Amy:
Where did you go?

Five Skandhas:
Into your heart!

Little Amy:
…Oh.

[BRIDGE — THE CATALYST]

[Music suddenly becomes intimate]
[Piano alone]

Little Amy:
What if I’m only
a chemical reaction…

Feeling:
Then it must be delicious.

Little Amy:
…What?

Feeling:
A chemical reaction.
Do we have tea?

[Comedy pause]

Little Amy:
Okay.
Let’s start over.

What if I’m only
a chemical reaction—

Thought:
Then you need a catalyst.

Little Amy:
Then are you
my catalyst?

[Everyone freezes]

Action:
I can do it!

Form:
Me too!

Feeling:
I wanna be the sweet one.

Consciousness:
All of you, step back.

[Big pause]

Consciousness:
A catalyst doesn’t always change the reaction.
Sometimes—

it simply makes it easier
for you to become yourself.

[Soft piano sparkle]

Little Amy:
…

Five Skandha Babies:
Hey.

[FINAL CHORUS — JOYFUL BROADWAY FINALE]

We’re in the Elemental Space,
No need to rush and find the why.
Scattered waves
slowly draw near.

Love and feeling, hope and fear,
There is room for all of them.
Consciousness, action, judgment, choice—
No need to explain it all.

Round and round the ripples go,
Little by little, flowing into life.
And when I reach my hand—

[Music stops]

I just happen to touch you.

[Beat]

Little Amy:
…I found you.

Five Skandhas:
Who did you find?

Little Amy:
Myself.

[ALL — whisper]

Ohhhhhh…

[Then suddenly HUGE]

Little Amy + Five Skandhas:
So—
we were together all along!

[OUTRO]

[Cheeky Piano]
[Clarinet twirls upward]
[Muted Trumpet: pwah!]

Action:
So where are we going now?

Little Amy:
Tea.

Feeling:
I knew it!

Form:
Are there desserts?

Thought:
I want cake.

Consciousness:
Didn’t you just realize something profound?

Little Amy:
Realization can wait.

[ALL]

TEA FIRST!!!

[Big Broadway ending]

[PIANO — plink!]
[TRUMPET — PWAH!]
[LAUGHTER]
[END]
