The pit by Kathryn Search

Two found they were deep in a pit, the edges were muddy and and the sides were quite slick. One was paralyzed, the other was fit, but the two were helpless to leave the slick pit. The fit tried and failed so many times, the walls of mud were too hard to climb, finally exhausted fit slumped to the floor, while the paralytic wept feeling deplored. I’d help if I could, said the one to the fit, but only my fingers can I move just a bit. The fit was dejected, lay flat on the floor, but we are helpless and I can climb no more. Then the one said to the fit, The Master is close, we should cry out to save us from this deadly pit! No, said the fit, I am a proud and self-reliant man, and pride myself on my own feet I stand! But minutes, then hours, passed as they sat in the pit, when both decided, we will die in this pit. We need the Master, said the one to the fit, but we have not followed His Will, not a bit. Said The fit, I’ve been lying, said I needed no help, when I told you I relied only on self. I know I look healthy but I feel so small, but my pride has kept me from making that call. They confessed one to another, wept, and shed tears, told each the other their hopes and their fears, they cried for forgiveness, they spoke it aloud, when the one heard the Master, answer their call. We have been trapped many hours, even some days, but we need you our Master, we ask to be saved! So we called out for hours, began to lose faith, until we exposed our weakness, it was then that You came. The Master smiled, I’ve been here the whole time, but I had to wait, till you broke down and cried, for you acknowledged your weakness, it was then changed your cry, and recognized was pride, upon which you relied.
