[Verse 1] By the cold gray edge of Superior’s foam Where the pines lean in like they’re guarding home We signed our names in the freezing rain Trusted the eagle Were paid in pain They came with papers and polished lies With measured voices and marble eyes Said “Loon Be loyal Your skies stay clear” Now our kids breathe smoke and our wells taste fear [Chorus] Oh sing Loon Sing Let your red heart ring For the promises shattered and strewn We gave our word They twisted theirs Now the north wind remembers the loon Now the north wind remembers the loon [Verse 2] Where once we raced to defend their nest Lauded as their very best. Now strangers are knocking on every door Counting our kin like a ledger score They took their tax, refuse to help Sent their lapdogs out to raise some hell Called it “security Trust us now” While they carved new chains ‘neath an orange brow [Chorus] Oh sing Loon Sing Let your red heart ring For the promises shattered and strewn We gave our word They twisted theirs Now the north wind remembers the loon Now the north wind remembers the loon [Bridge] We’re not your numbers Your quiet file We’re grain in the silo We’re frozen mile We’re iron and river We’re storm in June We’re the break in your talon We’re the laughing loon [Verse 3] So here’s my pledge by the frozen shore We’ll trust that eagle’s oath no more We’ll watch our neighbors We’ll guard our land Write our own laws with our own rough hands If they come again with their kindly schemes We’ll answer clear from our lakes and streams “Take back your bargains Your masked decree For the loon still sings And the loon stays free” [Chorus] Oh sing Loon Sing Let your red heart ring For the promises shattered and strewn We gave our word They twisted theirs Now the north wind remembers the loon Aye The north wind remembers the loon (hey!)
