The Little Wheel Turns

The sun came through A crooked window Gold Then red Then something Without a name I watched it move Across my hand Five fingers Five strangers All pointing Somewhere else There was a thread Inside the morning Thin Bright Turning I followed it Around the room Through the wall Across the sky Into a sound I almost remembered Not a word Older than words Maybe The little wheel turns Inside the larger wheel Inside another Inside Another Don’t count them You’ll never get home That way I closed my eyes The room stayed I opened them I didn’t Interesting There was a river Running backward Through the garden Flowers drinking From the moon A silver bird Standing in the water Perfectly still Except its reflection That kept going Where? There Where? There You keep asking The little wheel turns Inside the larger wheel And something At the center Doesn’t Move I thought I was The traveler Funny I thought I was The road Funnier Maybe I’m only The distance Between One foot And the next A bell somewhere Not calling Just ringing That’s different Listen No Listen underneath it There That long little shimmer Like light Learning how to bend Like a thought Before somebody owns it I knew that sound Before I knew My name Or maybe After I forgot it Same difference The wolves would hate this Too peaceful The king too Nothing here To rule The liar asks Is this real? Nobody answers Good The little wheel turns Inside the larger wheel Inside the stars Inside the skin Around Through Around again And something At the center Doesn’t Move I saw everybody I ever was Sitting beside the river The child The wolf The wounded one The one who stayed The one who ran The one who needed Every scar To mean something Move over There’s room Nobody argued That was new The river carried Our faces away One at a time Mine Mine Mine Not mine Gone The sun was lower now Or higher Who cares Time had become A circle again Then a line Then nothing Worth drawing I put my hand Against the earth Warm Alive Moving Very slowly Or very fast Depending On which thing You think you are There That sound again Thin Bright Turning Not leading Not following Just passing through The little wheel turns Inside the larger wheel And something At the center Doesn’t Move Maybe that’s home No We already learned About that Maybe it’s nothing Better Nothing Doesn’t need A name The last light Touched the water The water touched Everything else And for one moment No mirror No portal No house No road No before No after Just Around Through Around And still.
