I packed a few old photographs, my worn-out coat, my dreams, Left my home behind the gate where nothing’s as it seems. Foreign cities, foreign voices, every dawn brand new, But the rhythm of my childhood streets is beating strong and true. Though a thousand roads may keep us far apart, Home will always be the doorway of my heart. Every step has led me farther through the world, Still my home keeps calling like the days of old. Maybe I’ll return when the time is right, When I find myself beneath these foreign lights. An emigrant is someone who can truly see, Two different worlds live inside them endlessly. Once a simple phone call chased away my fears, Mam said, “My girl , you’ll be strong through all the years.” Daddy’s voice would always give me strength to carry on, Though an ocean stood between us, he was never gone. Now I cannot call them, silence fills the air, Their number lives forever in my heart with love and care. When I close my eyes, I hear them once again, For the sweetest memories will never reach an end. Though my family’s roof is many miles away, Its light will always guide me every single day. Every road will find its ending in the end, Hope will lead us safely through the mist again. If I ever make it home one blessed day, I’ll hear the laughter that has never gone away. For an emigrant may travel far and wide, But always carries home deep inside. There are no borders for our tears or memories, No map can ever show where our true home will be. Life has taught me wherever I may roam, Home is all the people that I carry in my soul.
