Solene Still Believes
[Introduction – scene setting] Just after dawn. Solene sits barefoot on the parquet floor of her Rue Amelot apartment. A half-drunk cup of mint tea cools beside her sketchbook. From the open window, pigeons flap, delivery trucks hum, and the air smells faintly of rain. She’s sketching again — something she hasn’t done since Richard looked at her like a stranger. [Verse 1 – soft, tracing a drawing] He walks like the man I knew, But there’s dust where his shadow stood. He says my name like it’s half a question — Like it once meant something good. There’s a fold in time behind his smile, A riverbed that’s run dry. He asks me what we used to be, And I say, “We never had to try.” [Verse 2 – looking at a faded photo of the contest hall] I dreamt of him under flickering glass, White walls, and silence that hummed like flame. He whispered truths no one remembers — But I remember just the same. They say those who return are changed, That something gets unmade. But he still sits like he’s guarding a promise — Even if it’s starting to fade. [Chorus – she wonders if he sees her. If, across whatever distance.] Standing now, watering the lavender pot on her window ledge. And I still believe in the man beneath — The one who touched the mirror and stayed. I still believe in the name he spoke Before the stars began to fade. I still believe the Garden listens — Not to judge, but to recall. And if he’s forgotten who we were, Then I’ll remember it for us both. I’ll remember it all. [Bridge – holding a small stone he once gave her, tucked in a kitchen drawer] He left a sketch inside my skin — A circle, two dots, then a flame. I trace it when I fear he’s lost, When he stares and forgets my name. [Verse 3 – curled on the couch, voice low] I don’t need him to say he loves me. I don’t need him to remember the fall. I only need that silent thread That still binds us through it all. [Final Chorus – seated at the window, watching people below head to the Bréguet–Sabin metro] And I still believe in the man who fell Into a silence deep and wide. I still believe he’ll speak that word He buried the day he died inside. I still believe in broken stars That write their names in flame. And if the Garden took his memory, It never took his name. [Coda – quiet again, as if thinking] He walks like the man I knew. And even if I’m wrong, I believe because I loved him — Not because he came back strong. Not all who return remember. But I do. And I always will.
