Hotel in the Sky

I sit on the porch as the evening descends, And count up the shadows of lifetime-long friends. The empty green chair where my brother would rest, The warmth of a mother who loved and who blessed. Their voices still echo through halls of my mind, Leaving sorrow and hardship so far far behind. The clock on the mantel ticks steady and slow, Reminding this pilgrim it’s nearly my time to go.

Welcome on in to the Hotel in the Sky, Where nobody weeps and no spirit will die. There’s room at the table, the banquet is spread, With all of our loved ones we thought we had fled. Yeah, they’re waiting right there where the starlight is bright, In the Hotel in the Sky

The doctor shook hands and he whispered goodbye, He told me the river was rising up high. My body is weary, my footsteps are slow, My suitcase is packed and I’m ready to go. The veil is quite thin in the chill of the dawn, I hear gentle whispers urging me on. They’re calling my name from a higher estate, And holding the latch on the heavenly gate.

No sorrow can touch us, no sickness can pain, No winter can freeze us with sorrow or rain. The fields are all golden, the meadows are wide, And old friends are walking right here by my side. The tears that I shed in the valley below, Are dried by the warmth of a heavenly host. The chapters of earth are all closing their book, As upward in faith and in wonder I look.

See you again... in the Hotel in the Sky.

The sunset is fading, the pavement is cold, I walk down the pathways of growing so old. The years slip away like the sand in my hand, A traveler wandering this shifting-sand land. I look at the framed photographs on the wall, Remembering laughter, the rise and the fall. I laid down my dearest ones, one by one by, And watched their sweet spirits take flight and drift high.
