All around the black smokers — the hydrothermal vents deep under the sea ♨️ — evolution and extinction were repeated again and again through mutation. The surrounding seawater contained not only thermal energy, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide, but was also rich in metal ions such as iron, nickel, cobalt, and magnesium, serving as catalysts essential for metabolism. After countless trials of chemical evolution, LUCA was born — like today’s surviving methanogens, capable of “feeding” on hydrogen and “breathing” carbon dioxide to generate energy. Its cells possessed membranes, a mechanism for self-replication that copied genes into daughter cells, and even primitive immune functions to defend themselves from external threats. In time, LUCA multiplied through vigorous cell division, spreading across the Earth like the triumphant finale of a trombone. Assuming one cell division per day, it would take only about three months to reach the current number of microbial individuals in the oceans, and about four months to fill the ocean’s volume with cells — at least in a doubling game with no constraints such as nutrient limits or predators.
