[Verse 1 ]

Back when I wore a cheaper suit,
And worked the cases no one wanted.
Every file was somebody's future,
Every client somebody haunted.

The State would come with badges shining,
Talk about the things they'd found.
I'd stand up and tell twelve strangers
There's another side to what went down.

When the jury filed back in,
You could hear a heartbeat pounding.

[Chorus]

Not guilty, Your Honor,
Words that set a spirit free.
Not guilty, Your Honor,
Music to a man like me.

When the walls are closing in,
And hope's hanging by a thread,
Ain't a sweeter sound in all this town
Than those four words being said.

[Verse 2]

Now I walk in through the same doors,
But I stand on the other side.
Representing all the victims,
Speaking for those who never got to decide.

I've seen blood stains on the pavement,
Seen families torn apart.
And every time I build a case,
I carry those faces in my heart.

Now when I hear those same four words,
They don't hit me quite the same.

[Chorus]

Not guilty, Your Honor,
Now they're harder words to hear.
Not guilty, Your Honor,
Sometimes justice disappears.

When you've spent months building truth,
Piece by piece and line by line,
You learn the law and justice
Don't always cross the finish line.

[Bridge]

Funny how the years can change you.
Funny how the view can shift.
One day you're fighting for freedom,
One day you're guarding the gift.

But every side believes they're right,
Every side believes they're true.
Maybe that's why this old courthouse
Still has work to do.

[Verse 3]

Someday maybe I'll take the bench,
Lay the arguments to rest.
Listen to both sides tell their stories,
Do my best to pass this test.

No cheering for the prosecution,
No rooting for the defense.
Just the weight of every decision,
And the burden of consequence.

And when the courtroom falls silent,
Waiting for my call...

[Final Chorus]

Not guilty, Your Honor,
Or guilty as charged today.
Neither one comes easy
When a life gets judged this way.

Cause justice isn't victory,
And justice isn't defeat.
It's doing what's right when nobody agrees,
And standing by your seat.

Not guilty, Your Honor...

Court is adjourned.
