Death Nesting - Hard To Be

Coffee’s gone cold, sun’s too bright, been up since the middle of last night. Bills on the counter, dirt on my hands, same old story, no one understands. The roof still leaks, the rent still climbs, my back’s got miles, my heart’s got dimes. Every day I push that stone, ain’t dead yet, but I’m halfway gone. It’s hard to be, when the days all lean, on a man with nothin’ left between. The work don’t quit, the wheels still turn, you give it all, but you never learn. The preacher talks about savin’ souls, but I’m too tired to play that game. Ain’t no gospel in the time clock’s chime, just blood and hours you leave behind. I’ve sung for the dead, I’ve buried my kin, but livin’s the curse that drags you in. The dirt sleeps easy, but I can’t lie still, just work and worry workin’ on me ‘til the day I will. It’s hard to be, when the days all lean, on a man with nothin’ left between. The fire’s out, the heart still burns, you pay in pain for each return. So I keep hummin’ that lonesome key, just a song to remind me I still breathe. Ain’t no mercy, no guarantee, it’s hard to die, but it’s harder to be.
