---------------------------------------------😶 Everything dissolves, and everything fades away, Only the moon still gazes through my windowpane. I shed my clothes and dive below, Through polished glass, into the dark, Where other worlds lie far beneath, Beyond the reach of day and spark. Beyond the third and final curtain, In a world on the far side of day, Among the dreams that smell of lemon balm, My sorrow sleeps, bathed in the moon's pale ray. Her gown is woven out of cobwebs, Her heart glows softly, amber-bright; A tear still glistens on her pallid cheek, Her bed, an altar to the dreams of night. Around her stand the silent shadows, Who once were gods in ages long gone by, Those pagan shrines, so mournful and forsaken, Who gaze indifferently into the sky. And I fly, a bat, between the houses, Past the windows, shuttered, blind with sleep, Through a maze of wires and branches, Startling crows from where they brood and keep. And in the square, beside the gateway, A giant searches through the night for someone lost. Above the town, above the sleeping rooftops, The yellow moon bears something in its grasp. Above the city, blue with midnight, The mist of night begins to drift and flow. Someone touches strings that sleep in silence, And an echo rolls across the world below. It drifts through streets still steeped in slumber, Like some far-off, sorrow-laden cry, And scatters memories like beads of amber, While grief hooks at the heart as it goes by. It whirls and turns... It draws me onward, Far beyond the city walls... Beyond the town lie fields of darkness, And past the fields, a phantom grove; The silent roads run on forever, And flee beyond the edge of the world. And slowly, slowly, night is ending, Her song dissolving in the dawn. My shadow still roams, half-dreaming, Through the dew the morning has drawn. And when the dawn at last comes calling, And finds my sorrow fast asleep, I shall leave, as my last offering, My wings beside her feet to keep...
