[Verse 1] By the roar of Minnehaha Falls where ancient waters fall, Kate Burke carved and painted beauty on the Veterans Home’s interior wall. What started as a Public Works commission, brushes, chisel, heart and hand, Grew into a labor of deep respect across this Minnesota land. An allegory of freedom in the gorge where heroes dwell, Strength and peace stand eternal in the stories that she tells. [Chorus] In the Land of the Free, where the eagle guards the light, And the dove brings peace beside the falls in morning’s golden light. From the hands of those who served, to the hearts that still beat strong, Kate Burke’s mural honors sacrifice where it belongs. Hand to hand, tear to tear, abundance shared with care, A work of love that moves old soldiers — moving them to prayer. [Verse 2] Flanked by the mighty Eagle standing proud before the Veterans’ Home, And the gentle Dove of peace before the rushing waterfall’s foam. The cedar waxwing harvests from the eagle’s open hand, Then shares with every neighbor true to nature’s sacred plan. From one to another, old to young, the fruit of freedom flows, Black to white to blue to yellow — cooperation grows. [Verse 3] Families gather in the scene as the harvest passes round, Individuals to loved ones in this blessed, fertile ground. Hidden birds and creeping creatures wind along the river’s way, Oak for sturdiness, laurel leaves of honor on display. Cherry trees of truth, the snake that whispers caution in the grass, A playful, living journey where discovery comes to pass. [Verse 4] At the unveiling the veterans stood before that interior wall, Tears flowed freely down their faces as they felt the spirit call. For every brother, sister, comrade who gave so much for liberty, This carved and painted masterpiece became their legacy. From Public Works to work of love, Kate poured her soul inside, A quiet thanks that touched the brave — they laughed, they wept, they cried. [Final Chorus] In the Land of the Free, let the eagle soar on high, Let the dove bring healing where the Minnehaha waters fly. For the veterans and their families, this vision stands so true, A mural born of duty, carved with respect anew. Thank you, Kate, for seeing them — their scars, their strength, their grace, In the Land of the Free, your colors light the way. [Outro] So when you walk those hallowed halls and pause before the wall, Feel the hands that carved it, hear the grateful veterans call… In the Land of the Free.
