TIME 008 – Fruit Beneath the Sphinx | The Time Machine

(Verse 1) The Traveller sat among them where the fruits were piled in rows, Beneath the silent Sphinx where every fragrant garden grows. The Eloi shared their plenty with no thought of price or need, And smiled as though the world itself had learned at last to feed. (Verse 2) He wandered through their dwellings where no private borders stood, And saw a life of leisure shaped by fellowship and food. No workshop marked the daylight and no burden scarred the plain, Yet something in their softness stirred a quiet thread of pain. (Chorus) The fruit beneath the Sphinx was sweet beneath the evening sky, But questions gathered slowly where the easy answers lie. Their paradise was gentle, yet its beauty seemed too slight, As though a deeper weakness slept beneath the golden light. (Verse 3) Their laughter came so quickly, and their interest faded fast, No hunger for the future and no wonder for the past. They seemed content with pleasures that could vanish in a breath, Too delicate for hardship and too innocent for death. (Verse 4) He watched their slender figures and their simple, fleeting thought, And wondered what long ages had surrendered or forgot. If struggle had been conquered, had it taken strength away, And left mankind like children in an everlasting day? (Chorus) The fruit beneath the Sphinx was sweet beneath the evening sky, But questions gathered slowly where the easy answers lie. Their paradise was gentle, yet its beauty seemed too slight, As though a deeper weakness slept beneath the golden light. (Bridge) The Traveller had dreamed that ease would lift the human mind, Yet here he found a gentleness that left resolve behind. The world had lost its hunger, but perhaps its fire had died, And paradise grew troubling as he looked beneath its pride. (Outro) He left the feast in silence while the Eloi laughed nearby, And watched the fading sunlight stain the distant western sky. The fruit remained abundant and the gardens still looked fair, But doubt had taken root within the sweetness of the air.
