We rolled into Hot Springs on a Friday night, Steam rising off the waters, city lights low and bright. Checked in the old hotel with the creaky wooden floors, You looked at me nervous, said “What if the cards show war?” We wandered downtown, past the shops and the baths, Found that little parlor with the crystals and the glass. She sat us down gentle, shuffled slow with a smile, Said “There’s a sister presence here, been ridin’ with y’all for a while.” You leaned over and whispered, “Babe, I think that’s her,” I nodded along, both of us a little twisted. We left it hanging, walked back out into the steam, Didn’t figure it out till later, back home in the dream. Death rode in gentle on that white horse, Smilin’ like he knew us from before. He said we’ll croak together when the curtain falls, Hand in hand through the final door. Right there beside him stood The Lovers true, The Sun blazin’ golden, no shadows in view. We walked in expectin’ the worst kind of news, But the cards turned it warm and left us renewed. She flipped the Ten of Cups right after the Wheel, Laughed soft and said “Y’all got somethin’ real.” That song had been blastin’ on every hospital run, “Hey soul sister, ain’t that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo…” Your mama in the hospital bed, radio hummin’ low, Listenin’ every day like it was all she needed to know. Later we realized she was the presence in the room, Sayin’ hello from the other side, chasin’ away the gloom. Funny how the reaper don’t scare when he’s kind, Just clears out the old so the new can unwind. We thought that reading might shatter the peace, Instead your mama showed up and brought us release. She used to love that song on every hospital drive, Now she’s singin’ along, sayin’ “Go on and live what I said— Stay together ’til we croak, just like the cards read.” Death rode in gentle on that white horse, Smilin’ like he knew us from before. He said we’ll croak together when the curtain falls, Hand in hand through the final door. Right there beside him stood The Lovers true, The Sun blazin’ golden, no shadows in view. We walked in expectin’ the worst kind of news, But the cards turned it warm and left us renewed. Yeah… downtown in Hot Springs… The cards smiled, your mama smiled, said we’re alright. We’ll be together ’til we croak, baby… Soul to soul, holdin’ on tight. I’m keepin’ you close, every mile, every night. (We’re gonna be just fine… together.)
