We all want to find balance in our lives. Sometimes it feels like we are constantly tilting, moving from one side to the other. As we try to balance work and pleasure, parents and children, home and careers. Master Shifu in Kung Fu Panda reminds Po to find inner peace. This peace brings harmony with the universe and allows for clarity. In the month of Elul, we seek this elusive state of balance. The prophet Zechariah famously says, return to Me, and I will return to you. What greater inner peace can there be than that? In this week’s Torah portion, Nitzavim-Vayelech, Moshe promises the people balance. When they return to God, He will give them true peace and open their hearts. The Malbim explains that this act removes the inclination to do evil. What a balance to aspire for! But Rav Yehudah Amital taught us that balance is not the goal of Torah life. The search for balance, he argued, is not what we are meant to pursue. Rather, the lack of balance is what drives us to grow and achieve. The see-saw of life, its ups and downs, is what keeps us moving forward.
