[Verse 1] Pulled in on a Friday run Saw her hood up in the lot She said, “My car won’t wake back up” And I said, “I got the charge you need” Jumper cables in my trunk Like a halo made of rust I hooked red to her trembling heart Then black to where the engine slept [Pre-Chorus] She kept watchin’ that trunk Like she’d lost her keys in there I laughed it off, said, “Easy now” But her hands were white as prayer Then the starter coughed And the whole car shook alive She reached for the latch Like she was tryna hide [Chorus] Dead battery Romeo I came to help, now I don’t know Dead battery Romeo When that hood jumped up And the truth cut slow [Chorus] Dead battery Romeo And the truth cut slow (dead battery Romeo) [Verse 2] Pop There was a shape in the spare tire light Leather shoes and a wedding ring Face gone pale in the heat My breath left me in a rush She said, “Don’t look at me like that” Voice like gravel in her throat “I only needed one more ride” But the trunk still held its coat [Pre-Chorus] I took a step back fast She took one toward the keys Sirens started far away Like thunder through the trees Then she smiled, real small Like a blade in a pocket line Said, “You wanna stay alive? Best keep that heart of mine” [Chorus] Dead battery Romeo I came to help, now I don’t know Dead battery Romeo When that hood jumped up And the truth cut slow (dead battery Romeo) [Instrumental Solo] [Bridge] I never saw her coming close I never saw the trap One dead car in a parking lot And one blacked-out past She kissed my cheek, then disappeared Before the gravel screamed I’m still hearin’ that trunk unlock In the middle of my dreams [Chorus] Dead battery Romeo I came to help, now I don’t know Dead battery Romeo When that hood jumped up And the truth cut slow [Chorus] Dead battery Romeo If you see a stranger stranded And she says it’s just a stall Think twice before you play the hero In that parking lot at all (dead battery Romeo)
