[Intro, piano alone] [Verse 1] I know the shortcut, I take the long way back, Past the corner store that never changed its sign. Got a week in my pocket and a stone in my shoe, Been rehearsing what to say instead of talking to you. Every good idea has been keeping me late, Every small delay has a reasonable name. I can tell you where the hours went, Can't tell you what the afternoon meant. [Hook, low and sung] Keep a little light on, I'll be coming round. I've been halfway home On the other side of town. [Verse 2] There's a tree through the fence by the basketball court, Somebody patched it, it grew back twice. I stand there longer than I need to stand, With my phone gone dark in the palm of my hand. You ask how I've been and I almost say fine, Then the story comes out in no particular line. You don't try to fix it, you put water on, For the first time today I let somebody go on. [Bridge, almost spoken] I thought I'd have more to show you. You said, take off your coat. [Hook] Keep a little light on, I'll be coming round. I've been halfway home On the other side of town. [Outro, piano decays] [End]
