I spent my whole life chasing understanding like it was oxygen. I thought being right was just being right, a clear definition. I thought seeing clearly was a gift you could simply give. I thought truth was a currency, the only way to live. Nobody told me about the invisible scores. Nobody told me about the traps beneath the floors. I thought a question wanted an answer, pure and direct— I didn't know a question could be a test of hierarchy and respect. Maybe people don't hate intelligence, maybe they hate the feeling of standing next to it. And I wouldn't know— I was too busy learning while everyone around me thought we were competing. I kept becoming more intelligent while becoming more alone— an accidental king on an unwanted throne. I started looking closer at the things nobody says. Everybody wants to matter. Everybody wants to be seen. Everybody wants to feel important, even when they don't know what they mean. Some need the credit. Some need the stage. Some need you smaller to feel their proper size. Some hide behind a question. Some hide behind a smile. Some give you all the freedom as long as you don't walk too far. And suddenly I understood: People aren't only exchanging words. They're exchanging position. Maybe people don't hate intelligence, maybe they hate the feeling of standing next to it. Maybe they don't hate the truth— maybe they hate what the truth does to their reflection. And I wouldn't know. I thought we were talking. I thought we were trying to understand. I didn't know there was a scoreboard. I didn't even know I was in the fucking race. I never understood the competition. Not with friends. Not with lovers. Not with family. Why are we keeping score? Why does your happiness have to threaten mine? Why does your strength have to become my defeat? I wasn't trying to win. I was trying to be close. I spent years pouring effort into something I thought we were building— while somebody else was counting points. And that's the joke. I lost a game I never agreed to play. Maybe I wasn't broken. Maybe I wasn't cold. Maybe I simply never got the fucking rulebook. I didn't know you could lose a room without saying anything wrong. I was measuring the truth... while they were measuring the stage. I was looking for meaning. They were looking for position. Maybe social intelligence is knowing when to shut your mouth. Maybe. But don't ask me to pretend I don't see the difference between someone who asks why and someone who learns the answer. Eighty-five percent don't ask. They learn the rules. They learn the smiles. They learn the temperature. And yes— I'm arrogant. What of it? I'd rather be an arrogant woman who asks the wrong question than a well-behaved fool who never asks one. So now I know the temperature before I speak. Not becoming less. Not acting weak. Just finally understanding what the light does to the room. Maybe that's intelligence too. Not knowing more. Knowing what knowing does. I never wanted the throne. I just wanted to know why everybody was kneeling. And apparently... that was the problem.
