Margate had that glow

[Intro, spoken softly] Yeah… This one’s for the old nights, Margate buzzing, Frank’s, Quasar, Dave, Eddie, and all the stupid things we somehow survived. [Verse 1] Back when Margate had that glow, Neon signs and nowhere to go, But somehow we made a whole world there, With cheap aftershave and terrible hair. Buzzing round Frank’s till the evening slipped, Coins in pockets and nonsense quips, Late night plans that made no sense, But back then, mate, we were confident. Popping out to see Eddie on the ride, Scenic Railway, king of seaside pride, Brakeman grin with a story to sell, Every shift sounded like heaven and hell. [Pre-Chorus] And Dave would say, “Just one more game,” Quasar lights and laser aim, Then out the door with the same old crew, Looking for trouble, as young lads do. [Chorus] Margate nights, Scenic Railway lights, Quasar beers and laughing till daylight, Cars and girls and stupid plans, The whole damn world in our young hands. We were skint but we felt like kings, Chasing dreams with broken wings, If I could go back for one more ride, I’d meet you all on the Margate side. [Verse 2] Eddie had stories, hundreds at least, Half were mad and half were beast, Trying to pull girls from the rollercoaster queue, Like every night was something brand new. Dave was there with a pint and a grin, Me pretending I knew where to begin, Cars in the car park, engines loud, Trying to look cool in front of the crowd. XR3i dreams and seaside roads, Bad decisions and heavy loads, But we laughed so hard we split the night, Even when nothing went quite right. [Pre-Chorus 2] And Quasar glowed like a spaceship door, Sweaty hands and sticky floor, Then out for beers and a walk through town, No one thinking life would slow us down. [Bridge, spoken-sung] It weren’t glamorous, It weren’t clever, But somehow those nights stick forever. Frank’s was buzzing, Quasar was calling, Someone was laughing, Someone was falling. Eddie on the railway, Dave with the beers, Me just soaking up all those years. And Margate, old Margate, Rough round the seams, Still held the soundtrack To half of our dreams. [Final Chorus, bigger, emotional] Margate nights, Scenic Railway lights, Quasar beers and laughing till daylight, Cars and girls and stupid plans, The whole damn world in our young hands. We were skint but we felt like kings, Chasing dreams with broken wings, If I could go back for one more ride, I’d meet you all on the Margate side. [Outro, fading] Yeah, meet me by the lights, By the old arcade glow, Where the lads still laugh In the places we used to go. Margate nights… Scenic Railway lights… Dave, Eddie, beers and cars… We weren’t lost, mate, We were young.
